The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) of the 5GIF is a registered technical body participating in the ITU-R process for evaluating candidate radio interface technologies. Drawing from our extensive experience in the IMT-2020 (5G) evaluation process, the 5GIF IEG has been reformed to contribute to the development of global 6G standards under the IMT-2030 umbrella.

Our membership comprises a vibrant collaborative ecosystem of stakeholders from Industry, Academia, and Network Operators across India. By utilizing transparent, community-driven methodologies, we conduct rigorous technical assessments, software simulations, and performance reviews to ensure that proposed technologies meet globally harmonized standards.

The IMT-2030 (6G) Evaluation Framework

The next generation of mobile technology is being defined by the "IMT-2030 Framework" (Recommendation ITU-R M.2160). As an Independent Evaluation Group, our core mission is to assess candidate Radio Interface Technologies (RITs) submitted to the ITU-R against stringent performance requirements.

We evaluate candidates across six primary usage scenarios defined for 6G:

The 5GIF IEG ensures that candidate technologies are assessed fairly and equally on a technical basis, verifying capabilities such as peak data rates of 50–200 Gbps, sub-millisecond latencies (0.1–1 ms), and strict adherence to core 6G design principles like Sustainability, Security, and Ubiquitous Intelligence.

Reference Documents & Methodology

To maintain an impartial and technically rigorous assessment, the 5GIF IEG aligns its methodology with the official Guidelines for Evaluation published by ITU-R WP 5D.

During the active evaluation phases, our working groups collaborate on technical reports, link-level/system-level simulation tools, and analytical models. We strongly emphasize collaborative development, maintaining open repositories, and engaging actively with other global evaluation bodies and standardization groups like 3GPP.
